La Chocolatada Peru

History of La Chocolatada

Perhaps it was the spirit of Christmas that first inspired the idea of doing something special to bring joy to the children of poor coffee producers. It first began in 2004 when Organic Products Trading Company donated funds to the Cafe Femenino Foundation to begin “A Coffee Child's Christmas."

Each year this unique and wonderful program has grown with more donors stepping forward so more and more children can participate. The children began to call it the “La Chocolatada” as each community made large vats of hot chocolate for the children. At La Chocolatada the children each receive a cup of hot chocolate and a piece of Panettone bread. The whole community comes together during this event to celebrate the holidays with the children. Singing, dancing and skits done by children and parents alike add to the festivities and culminating with “Papa Noel” delivering a simple toy to the children. The real gift of this program is not only the smiles of the children but the happiness it brings to the parents of these children to be able to see their children’s happy faces.

The La Chocolatada is symbolic of the kindness of the coffee industry and our commitment to help and support the families who supply the special product we all enjoy. We hope that you will take the time to come and enjoy this celebration at SCAA that began with the children of Peru.
